We create opera differently.

Our stories emerge from communities across time and place. We take the time to listen, develop, and build genuine connections—growing together through the artistic process. From these bonds, we craft fictional characters and works that speak to us all.

Our operas are for the here and now.

They amplify voices long forgotten or never heard, challenge preconceived notions, and spark dialogues within the communities we engage with.

Our operas push boundaries.

We strive for performances that are as meaningful as they are exceptional. By bringing together exciting innovative creators, we push the needle in mediums, engagement, and musical expression and create unique stories and spaces that reflect them.

AUGMENTED REALITY WALK OPERA

SOFT LAUNCH OF
THE END OF THE WORLD

On December 28, 2024, after three years of development and the loss of the main composer, Patricia Martínez, THE END OF THE WORLD, developed based on female stories of world ends and new beginnings held in Buenos Aires, Zurich and Vienna in 2022, is finally making its debut to the world.

Join us for our Soft Launch and help us with your feedback! Additional performances at the end of February 2025. An audiences equipped with an Augmented Reality capable device and headphones follow a choir of female ancestors and nine characters through a landscape of first familiar world end scenarios and then personal and moving scenes that culminate in a final choir: the end wasn't the end.

With additional music by Hannah Eisendle, Golfam Khayam, Netta Shahar, Diana Syrse and Lina Tonia.

“What develops in terms of psychological grief dynamics is the reality of the now reflected in art. After a moment of moved silence, the team receives long applause for what is indeed an innovative evening of opera.”
- Claus-Ulrich Heinke, Orpheus Magazin about Great Open Eyes

THE TEAM

Civic Opera Creations

Founded in 2020 in Vienna, Civic Opera Creations quickly made its name co-producing bold, innovative works that resonate with today's world. Collaborating with renowned opera houses, ensembles, and festivals—as well as forging strong civic partnerships—the company, led by artistic director Carmen C. Kruse, is dedicated to expanding the operatic repertoire with urgent, lived experiences that need to be told.

Civic Opera Creations specializes in crafting unique development processes tailored to each story, assembling the right creative teams and partnerships, and ensuring seamless project management and communication for busy collaborators. The company also secures additional funding to bring ambitious visions to life. From intimate explorations of grief and child loss to celebrations of queer joy, from the female experience of world-altering events to our shared cultural identity through food, Civic Opera Creations has brought deeply human stories to the stage. Whether on the main stage, in alternative spaces, or immersive virtual and augmented reality settings, its productions engaged both seasoned opera audiences and new communities across Europe, and earned the “Cross Award” in Italy.

Collaborations with exciting creative artists such as Manuel Zwerger, Carolyn Amann, Patricia Martínez, Golfam Khayam, Hannah Eisendle, Lina Tonia, Diana Syrse, Giuliana Kiersz and partners like the SWR Experimentalstudio, Theater Münster, Volksoper Wien, the Cross Festival, Musiktheatertage Wien, Ensemble chromoson, and Schallfeld Ensemble, have brought about the creation of new operas, praised for their "innovative", "boundary-pushing" and "current" character.
